Types of Conservatorships
Conservatorships of the person and conservatorships of the estate are the most common types of conservatorships sought in California courts. Either or both of these may be sought — depending on the needs of the person to be placed under the conservatorship.
A conservator of the person is responsible for the well-being of the individual placed under the conservatorship. The duties of this type of conservator include determining where the individual will live and making sure that they have proper food, clothing, and medical care.
A conservator of the estate manages the personal finances of an individual placed under this type of conservatorship. This type of conservatorship is most appropriate in situations where the individual has demonstrated an inability to manage their finances or a tendency to be financially exploited by others.
A third type of conservatorship is the limited conservatorship for developmentally disabled adults. This type of conservator may have some amount of both personal and financial decision-making power but is required to use that power to help the individual to become as independent as they can be.
